World Of Dance Sparks A Debate After Young Girls Dance To Single Ladies

The World Of Dance is a competition intended to “celebrate urban dance.” Some are wondering, though, if World Of Dance competitors went too far when a video of 8 and 9 year old girls dancing to Put A Ring On It hit the internet. The prize for winning a World of Dance division is $500 in instant cash loans, but these girls seem to have won web infamy. So what’s the big deal?

World of Dance competition

The World of Dance competition is an open competition, usually about eight hours long. In age-separated divisions, groups and individuals of all types compete. World of Dance is supposed to be a “modern” dance competition that “embraces urban dance” rather than ballroom or traditional dance competition. The World of Dance Tour uses corporate “sponsorships” and a festival atmosphere to draw in observers. Fashion designers, hair stylists and more display their products at the World of Dance Tour, hoping to non-traditionally market to the billion-dollar youth and teen market.

The World of Dance controversy

Many people had never heard of the World of Dance before this video hit YouTube. In the last few days a video of five very young girls dancing to Beyonce’s “Put a Ring On It” has been circulating - and garnering loud debate on both sides. The girls wore halter tops and hotpants and were definitely shaking it. Parents point out that the dance moves came from the “Chipettes” of the recent Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, rather than the Beyonce video.

Reaction of World of Dance

Along with the coach and parents of the “Single Ladies girls”, World of Dance has gone on-the-record about the controversy. The official World of Dance representative says the girls “did nothing provocative.” Among other things, parents point out that the performance was well-received at the competition and was never intended for a wider audience. So what do you think. Did this young girl’s dance troupe step over the line? Or are they just incredible performers who did a dance they first saw in a kid’s movie?
