Is There A Karaoke Tune You Should Avoid?

Karaoke a good time.  I think it is a riot that if you are looking at the ten top karaoke songs lists and the 10 untouchable karaoke songs lists, you see some identical songs.  Certain tunes are simply irresistible and when you enjoy accessing the machine karaoke it means you’ll sing that tune until the bar throws you out at closing time.  It is funny how lots of karaoke hits are on the Rolling Stone “Twenty Most Annoying Songs” countdown.

Is Rolling Stone disapproval likely to end our song selections?  No dice, I won’t miss a beat. (The Rolling Stone editorial doesn’t injure my sensibilities since karaoke is surely not their cup of tea, right?)  But what is the right song to select out of the immense songbook the KJ has?  The right song for you depends on your voice and which songs you are acquainted with, but those considerations aside I must say that if you are able to pass up these favorites you ought not sing a song from the following list.

Seriously?  You see, if you pick a karaoke standard, you’ll get drowned out as the audience sings along with you.  The crowd will definitely know these songs.  These are the tracks that most any karaoke audience loves.  I could label them “best” or “anthem” karaoke tunes.  Choosing a tune from this list in a room loaded with karaoke performers is going to lead to overwhelming audience participation.  I wish the karaoke DJ equipment owner would lead the audience in a chorus of these songs throughout the show.  That would force singers to find a fresh “signature” tune, at a minimum.

Karaoke Standards - The Ten:
1. “Love Shack” by the B-52’s
2. Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’”
3. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” by The Rolling Stones
4. Bryan Adams’ “Summer of ‘69”
5. “Roxanne” – The Police
6. “Born to Be Wild” by Steppenwolf
7. “Cecilia” by Simon and Garfunkel
8. “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond
9. “Imagine” by John Lennon
10. ”American Pie” (Don McLean’s song, but use the shorter Madonna cover, I ask)

Can’t deny that we love to sing those karaoke standards.  I simply pity the KJ with that VocoPro set up.  Because you can tell that KJs inveset mountains of energy and money into this compilation of karaoke tracks – I mean, we are looking at hundreds of songs! – and we sing the same fifty or so most times.  So if you want to have your microphone and limelight to yourself, pick a track that is not a karaoke standard…today!
